Sanitation workers lay siege to Warangal municipal office

Hundreds of sanitation workers lay siege to municipal corporation office demanding minimum wages on Thursday. Telangana Municipal Workers & Employees’ Union (TMWEU) under the aegis of CITU led the agitation demanding increase in wages and provision of PF and ESI.

Over 1,000 workers employed in sanitation, water supply and electricity wings of the municipal corporation lay siege to the office from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A delegation of workers held talks with the Additional Commissioner, S. Masood, who reportedly promised to look into their demands.

CITU leader R. Ramesh said the official has agreed to increase the wages of those workers employed in villages that were merged with the corporation, sanction weekly offs and provide PF and ESI from April 1.

“With regard to minimum wage of Rs. 14,170 per month, the official said it was under the jurisdiction of the State government and he said the corporation would write to the government seeking its approval,” the CITU leader said. The Additional Commissioner also agreed to deposit the amount deducted from workers’ wages into their respective PF and ESI accounts soon. The union also demanded an inquiry into the insurance scheme where Rs. 8,000 was deducted from each worker’s account much against their consent. “We smell rat in the scheme. The corporation officials said they would take a decision after the Commissioner comes back from his leave,” union leaders said.

Joint meeting on April 6

Both the unions and corporation officials agreed to hold a joint meeting to discuss the issue and the pending demands on April 6.

“Minimum wage for unskilled workers should be Rs. 14,170 and for skilled workers Rs. 17,380,” said Mr. Ramesh and Union leader Jannu Prakash.

There were a total of 1,850 sanitation workers, including 400 workers from the villages that were merged into the Greater Warangal.

“Those employed in villages under the corporation are being paid a mere Rs. 300 to Rs. 3,500,” the leaders lamented.
