With rains breaking records, Telangana faces a grim flood situation

 With incessant rains continuing to play havoc in Andhra Pradesh for seventh consecutive day, Telangana region was facing one of the worst flood threats in recent times. With hundreds of villages across five districts of Adilabad,Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Warangal and Khammam cut off by the floods in river Godavari and other smaller rivers, the state government has alerted the administration and kept four helicopters ready for the relief and rescue measures.

Chief Minister N Kirankumar Reddy, who reviewed the grim situation at a high level meeting asked the officials to take the help of the army if needed.

Thousands of acres were also submerged in the rain hit districts. In Adilabad district alone 10,117 hectares of crops were submerged by the flooded Penganga and Pranahita rivers.

In an indication of the gravity of the situation, Warangal district has received highest rainfall of last thirty years. 51 mandals of the district have received nine centimetres of rains in 24 hours. Highest rainfall of 29 centimetres was recorded in Bhupalpally and Eturanagaram mandals and 27 centimetres in Medaram mandal of the district.

According to the weather office, Vejedu in Khammam has received the highest ever rainfall of 45 centimetres and Venkatapuram 21 centimetres resulting in floods in many parts of the district. In Warangal Parkala recorded, 18 centimetres, Lakshatipeta in Adilabad recorded 20 centimetres , Sricilla and Kaleshwaram in Karimnagar recorded 19centimetres of rains during last 24 hours.

Over all Telangana has received 63 per cent more than normal rains this year so far. The region as a whole recorded 439.4 millimetres of rains against normal of 196.1. The rains were 15 per cent excess in Andhra and nine per cent excess in Rayalaseema.

Revenue minister N Raghuveera Reddy said that if rains continue like this, Grampanchayat elections will have to be postponed in some places.

Khammam was one of the worst hit by the rains and floods as Godavari had crossed the third danger mark at 53 feet in Bhadrachalam. Water had entered the residential colonies of the town and the pilgrims at the famous Ram temple were facing a lot of hardship as water had entered some parts of the complex.

Bhadrachalam town was also cut off from the outside world as roads were under flood water.

Khammam district collector Srinivas Shrinaresh said that the Godavari level will reach 60 feet tonight and was expected to reach a high of 65 feet if water was released from Yellampally project tomorrow morning.

“People in the low lying areas have been put on alert. At least hundred villages were marooned”, he said.

Flood water has entered residential areas of Kamareddy town in Nizamabad district. Godavari was also spate in East Godavri district and authorities were releasing 8.53 lakh cusecs of water in to sea in view of the rising levels of the sea.

In Hyderabad, the Hussain Sagar lake the water reached the maximum level. As the rains and the inflows in to the lake were continuing, authorities were planning to release the water and the people in low lying areas have been put on alert.

In Adilabad a major tragedy was averted as RTB bus was caught in the swirling flood water nears Kaghaznagar town. The driver and the conductor saved their lives by going on top of the bus. They were rescued by the local people. Fortunately there were no passengers in the bus at the time of the incident.

At least 20 houses collapsed in Saidapur village of Karimnagar district due to the incessant rains.

With depression in Bay of Bengal persisting, weather office has warned of more rains in the next 24 hours.
