WARANGAL: The water released from Lower Manair Dam (LMD), Karimnagar, through Kakatiya canal would reach Warangal on Monday morning. The irrigation department officials released the water on Saturday into the canal that feeds three summer storage tanks in Warangal.
It is said that 500 cusecs of water will be released to Warangal till February 28, following a request from Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation. Since the existing amount of water is sufficient only to last for about 90 days ie, up to April or till the beginning of May, the released water will ensure that there will be no water scarcity in June and July, even if there are no rains.
There are three summer storage tanks that cater to the drinking water needs of tri-cities of Warangal, Hanamkonda and Kazipet. They are Dharmasagar - 31.8 feet with 425 million cubic feet of water (full tank level 795 mcft), Bhadrakali tank - 14 feet with 98 mcft of water (full tank level 150 mcft) and Waddepalli tank 12.1 feet with 130 mcft of water (full tank level 132 mcft). In all, there is 655 mcft of water and excluding the evaporation and seepage losses, the water available is only 458 mcft.
It is said that the GWMC officials asked the engineers to patrol along Kakatiya Canal to prevent farmers from drawing water to tide over the drinking water crisis in the city.
